ElSCAT OBSERVATIONS OF BURSTS OF RAPID FLOW IN THE HIGH LATITUDE DAYSIDE IONOSPHERE

چکیده
Observations are presented of short-lived, highly structured bursts of rapid plasma flow observed with the ElSCAT radar in the high latitude dayside ionosphere. It is shown that the properties of the bursts are consistent with ionospheric perturbations caused by impulsive, localized reconnection at the Earth's magnetopause, i.e. by flux

متن کاملThe Pulsating Cusp
Recent observations at the magnetopause and of the high-latitude ionosphere, suggest that the cusp may be pulsed in nature. Specifically ground-based observations in the dayside auroral oval reveal transient optical features accompanied by bursts of enhanced plasma flow. Also, recent interpretation has shown cusp satellite data to be consistent with a burst of enhanced reconnection. In this pap...
متن کاملOn the Reversal from “Sunward” to “Antisunward” Plasma Convection in the Dayside High Latitude Ionosphere
Preliminary observations of dayside high latitude ionospheric plasma convection with the Sondrestrom incoherent-scatter adar indicate that plasma can be observed to enter the polar cap region through rotational reversals at most local times between dawn and dusk and not just in a narrow region around noon. Assuming that rotational reversals are signatures of a solar wind-magnetosphere interacti...
متن کاملModulation of dayside reconnection during northward interplanetary magnetic field
[1] On 17 September 2000 the IMF was directed continuously northward for more than 3 hours. Density fluctuations in the solar wind resulted in quasiperiodic variations in the solar wind dynamic pressure, and correlated fluctuations also occurred in the IMF Bz component. The Northern Hemisphere SuperDARN radars observed bursts of highlatitude high-velocity plasma flow during this northward IMF i...
متن کاملComment on By fluctuations in the magnetosheath and azimuthal flow velocity transients in the dayside ionosphere by Newell and Sibeck
Newell and Sibeck [ 1993 ] (hereafter N&S) list some objections to our interpretation of dayside auroral transients and associated azimuthal flow bursts in terms of pulsed recom•ection [e.g. Lockwood et al., 1989; 1993a]. They present what they term an "apparently overlooked" alternative xplanation in terms of steady reconnection and fluctuations in the magnitude of the By component of the magn...
